6 Animals you didn't know could smile

Having a bad day? I have a suggestion that just might make you crack a smile and maybe even chuckle. Do an internet search for “smiling dogs” and you will be amazed at all the happy dogs in this world! I’ll never forget the first smiling dog I ever had the pleasure of meeting. His name was Hudson and he was (and I mean this in the kindest way) not a very cute dog as far as dogs go.

A mid-sized cross-breed with short coarse beige hair, placid eyes. I was making my feeding rounds at the pet boarding service where I was then employed and as I approached his run, I checked the tag that described him because he’d only just arrived the evening prior and I hadn’t introduced myself yet. His specially made card said “HUDSON* 5 yrs old *Gentle and Sweet, then under that in red marker it said “SMILER”. I was interested, to say the least, and as I opened Hudson’s kennel I said, “Hey Hudson, how are you today? This tag says you’re a smiler. Do you smile?” And that beige-coloured, average looking canine transformed into a price! He grinned the biggest, goofiest grin and I found myself laughing out loud. I was utterly amazed!

That was the day that I learned that pets can actually smile. With dogs, it’s not terribly common, but it’s an accepted fact that dogs do, in fact, smile. But what about other pets?

smiling cute kittenCats smile. There are people who would argue on the statement, but not only are smiling cats all over the internet, I’ve got my own smiling cat. Of course, they wouldn’t dream of doing it on command like a dog. They choose the moment which is, of course, a moment at which they are being perfectly pampered or playing with a favourite toy.

Maybe if you’re having a rotten week you should search for images under a more general “smiling animals”. When I tried it out of curiosity, I was positively charmed at what I found. I discovered that the smile is the universal outward manifestation of happiness. Monkeys smile and seem to enjoy posing for the camera. Owls close their eyes when they smile. You can definitely recognise a happy dolphin. Have you ever seen a smiling turtle? How about a smiling turtle on his back having his tummy tickled with a toothbrush!?

It should give anyone a different perspective on the world to see expressions of joy from our animal friends. If you’ve got a smiler, show him off, and upload his picture on our Facebook page, or tag us in Instagram or Twitter #PetStayAdvisor #smile! It cheers people up! And you can be happy in the knowledge that your pet is talented enough to let you know just how happy you are making his life!

One smile can’t change the world, but my fur baby’s smile sure as heck changes mine!
