Do your pets have an official pet guardian? They should… Molly the orphaned kitty

It's not something we like to think about, but what would happen to your beloved pets if, God forbid, something happened to you and you were not able to care for them? You're probably not worried, right? Your sister has always said she'd love to have a cat just like your Cookie, and your best friend has three dogs and you just know she'd take Cookie in.  Well, not so fast - read this cautionary yet happy-ending true story - then rethink your plans for your fur babies should anything happen to you.

Meet Molly & the “Treat Lady”

An elderly lady named Elizabeth lived an active lifestyle in her own home with her beloved ten-year-old cat Molly. Molly had a very sweet and friendly disposition, and she especially liked her next-door neighbour, Anne, who sometimes fed her kitty treats through the adjoining fence. Other than carrying a bit of extra weight around her tummy, Molly was a happy and healthy cat.

One day while in her garden, Elizabeth suffered a massive stroke and sadly passed away suddenly. Elizabeth's sister arrived the next day. Anne asked how Molly was doing without her 'mom', and was shocked to hear her announce that Molly had been 'sent to a shelter to be put down - after all, she's too old to adjust to a new home, and I'm allergic to her.'

Shocked and distressed, Anne rushed to the shelter where she was able to rescue Molly, who was very happy to see the familiar “Treat Lady.” Although it took several weeks for her to settle into her new home, Molly is now doing just fine. Reflecting on what almost happened to Molly, Anne has made arrangements that should anything happen to her, there are now two official Pet Guardians lined up, ready and willing to take Molly in and give her a good home.

Assigning a Pet Guardian

The terrible truth is that 80% percent of animals that enter animal shelters are euthanized. That’s why it’s so important to make arrangements for a Pet Guardian to care for your pet if necessary. Of course you'll ask them first if they'd like to be your Pet's Guardian, and if they agree, write out a simple document indicating their name, address and phone number, sign it, put it with your important papers and give a copy to the Pet Guardian. Then … and this is the important part ... do it again! Make sure you appoint at least a second (and even a third) Pet Guardian just in case the first situation doesn't work out—people and circumstances do change.

With just a little time and effort you can essentially guarantee that your pet will live a full and happy life with someone who loves her as much as you do now.
